SCALE's mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals living with aphasia and their families. APHASIA (uh-fay'-zhuh) is a language disorder that impairs the expression and understanding of spoken language, reading and writing. It occurs most often from a stroke or brain injury. This frustrating condition affects a person's ability to communicate, but does not affect his or her intellect. SCALE provides individuals with aphasia and new found isolation, a place to connect and enjoy the theraputic benefit of interactive group activities. SCALE's programs and treatments are designed to support and empower its members as they re-engage in community. SCALE also provides educational materials, training and support for family members. SCALE also strives to raise public awareness of aphasia through community outreach and advocacy projects.

SCALE's Evening with Captain Mark Kelly, Astronaut and Husband of Gabby Giffords, former US Congresswoman

On Monday, December 10, 2012 the Snyder Center will host its first large fundraiser by presenting "SCALE's Evening with Capt. Mark Kelly, Astronaut and Husband of Gabby Giffords, former US Congresswoman.

Astronaut Mark Kelly, the co-author of "Gabby: A story of Courage and Hope" will give an intimate, inspiring and unforgettably moving talk about his life with Gabby Giffords both before and after her aphasia, as well as his own adventures in space as the Commander of both NASA shuttle missions Discovery and Endeavour. He will provide a first hand look at the challenges of aphasia and the painstaking process of having to learn to communicate again. You will also hear about their ambitions, their sense of duty and their love for each other both before and after the events of Tucson, Arizona that forever changed the lives of these two remarkable and extraordinary Americans.

This anticipated event will begin with SCALE's VIP Reception from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. The program and talk by Capt. Kelly will begin at 7:30pm. The event will be held at Beth El Congregation in Baltimore, Maryland. Those attending the VIP reception will receive refreshments and the opportunity to meet Capt. Mark Kelly and to purchase and have him personally sign his book. Following the program, Capt. Kelly will a have a book signing as well.
